O melhor: Portugal conseguiu equilibrar o jogo na primeira parte, saindo para o intervalo em vantagem, apesar das dificuldades constantes no breakdown e da pressão física imposta pelos avançados uruguaios. A defesa portuguesa mostrou-se mais combativa do que organizada, conseguindo travar várias investidas dos Teros e capitalizar uma das poucas oportunidades ofensivas com eficácia.
The best part: Portugal managed to keep the game balanced in the first half, going into halftime in the lead despite constant difficulties at the breakdown and the physical pressure imposed by the Uruguayan forwards. The Portuguese defense was more combative than organized, stopping several surges from the Teros and capitalizing efficiently on one of their few attacking opportunities.
O pior: Segunda parte para esquecer. A seleção lusa apenas somou três pontos após o intervalo e cometeu uma série de erros que resultaram diretamente em pontos para o adversário. O cartão vermelho mostrado a Santiago Lopes aos 53 minutos, após revisão do cartão amarelo, praticamente acabou com a capacidade de reção dos Lobos que, a partir daí, não voltou a entrar nos 22 metros uruguaios. Também o banco português revelou pouca profundidade, e o selecionador não conseguiu fazer alterações que invertessem o rumo da partida, deixando a equipa sem soluções para travar o domínio crescente dos Teros.
The not-so-good part: A second half to forget. The Portuguese side scored only three points after halftime and committed a series of errors that directly resulted in points for the opposition. The red card shown to Santiago Lopes at the 53rd minute, after review of a yellow card, practically ended the Lobos’ ability to react; from that point on, they did not enter the Uruguayan 22 again. The Portuguese bench also showed little depth, and the head coach failed to make changes that could turn the match around, leaving the team without solutions to stop the Teros’ growing dominance.
Melhor em Campo: Rodrigo Marta. O marcador do único ensaio de Portugal foi o jogador mais inconformado em campo, tentando constantemente inverter o rumo dos acontecimentos com iniciativa ofensiva e agressividade nos duelos.
Player of the match: Rodrigo Marta. The scorer of Portugal’s only try was the player who most refused to accept the outcome, constantly trying to change the course of events with attacking initiative and aggressive play in contact.
O Estádio Nacional do Jamor recebeu o primeiro jogo dos Lobos nesta janela internacional de novembro, com uma fraca afluência de público nas bancadas. Esta pouca adesão esteve seguramente relacionada com o facto de terem sido agendados, para o mesmo dia, três jogos da Taça de Portugal e várias partidas das camadas jovens, afastando atletas, famílias e adeptos num momento em que se procura precisamente reforçar a ligação entre a seleção e a comunidade do rugby nacional. Já anteriormente tínhamos criticado esta sobreposição de calendário, nomeadamente aquando da marcação simultânea de jogos nacionais num dia de competição dos Lusitanos, mas repetir o mesmo erro com a equipa principal parece incompreensível.
The National Stadium in Jamor hosted the Lobos’ first match of the November international window, with a weak turnout in the stands. This low attendance was certainly linked to the fact that three Portuguese Cup matches and several youth fixtures were scheduled for the same day, keeping players, families, and fans away at a time when the federation is trying to strengthen the connection between the national team and the domestic rugby community. We had already criticized this calendar overlap previously, especially when national matches were scheduled on the same day as the Lusitanos played, but repeating the same mistake with the senior national team seems inexplicable
No plano desportivo, a convocatória apresentada por Simon Mannix também levantou algumas questões. O selecionador nacional deixou de fora dos 23 jogadores nomes que têm tido bons desempenhos e que poderiam ter dado maior profundidade à equipa, como Lucas Martins — especialmente relevante tendo em conta o recente regresso de Raffaele Storti após lesão — e Manuel Vareiro, que tem estado em destaque no ProD2 francês. Também a ausência de jogadores experientes na segunda linha, como Martin Bello ou Steevy Cerqueira, foi notada, num jogo que exigia maior robustez física e liderança em momentos de maior pressão.
On the sporting side, the squad list announced by Simon Mannix also raised questions. O jogo começou equilibrado, com ambas as equipas a tentarem impor o seu ritmo, mas com dificuldades evidentes na gestão do breakdown por parte dos Lobos. Portugal mostrou desacerto na disputa das fases estáticas e, tal como o Uruguai, recorreu várias vezes a pontapés longos para ganhar território, nem sempre com critério. O marcador só se alterou aos 21 minutos, quando Santiago Alvarez converteu uma penalidade para os Teros. A resposta portuguesa chegou aos 27 minutos, com Rodrigo Marta a pontapear para as costas da defesa uruguaia e a antecipar-se em corrida para marcar o primeiro ensaio do jogo. O intervalo chegou com 5-3 no marcador, e o equilíbrio registado na primeira parte deixava antever uma segunda metade disputada, o que não se verificou.
The match began evenly, with both teams trying to impose their rhythm but with clear issues for the Lobos at the breakdown. Portugal struggled in set-piece contests and, like Uruguay, often opted for long kicks to gain territory, not always with good judgment. The scoreboard only changed at the 21st minute when Santiago Alvarez converted a penalty for the Teros. Portugal responded in the 27th minute, with Rodrigo Marta kicking behind the Uruguayan defense and beating everyone to score the first try of the match. Halftime came at 5–3, and the balance of the first half suggested a closely contested second period — which did not materialize.
Portugal até começou melhor o segundo tempo, somando mais três pontos numa penalidade convertida por Samuel Marques, na sequência de uma falta que custou ao número 10 uruguaio, Felipe Etcheverry, um cartão amarelo. No entanto, mesmo a jogar contra 14, os Lobos não conseguiram capitalizar a vantagem numérica. Aos 52 minutos, o pilar uruguaio Ignacio Peculo recebeu a bola no seu meio campo e, apesar da oposição de três defensores lusos, correu até à área de validação para marcar um ensaio surpreendente.
Portugal even started the second half better, adding three more points from a penalty by Samuel Marques following an infringement that earned Uruguay’s fly-half, Felipe Etcheverry, a yellow card. However, even playing against 14, the Lobos failed to capitalize on the numerical advantage. At the 52nd minute, Uruguayan prop Ignacio Peculo received the ball in his own half and, despite opposition from three Portuguese defenders, ran all the way to score a surprising try.
Pouco depois, aos 57 minutos, uma entrada à cabeça de um adversário por parte de Santiago Lopes valeu-lhe o cartão amarelo, posteriormente agravado para vermelho após revisão do vídeoárbitro. A inferioridade numérica revelou-se fatal para Portugal, que já mostrava dificuldades em organizar-se e disputar o jogo. Aos 61 minutos, numa jogada de insistência, o Uruguai marcou o segundo ensaio por intermédio do número 6, Manuel Ardao.

The numerical disadvantage proved fatal for Portugal, who were already struggling to organize themselves and stay competitive. At the 61st minute, after sustained pressure, Uruguay scored their second try through number 6, Manuel Ardao.

Portugal volta a jogar no dia 15 de novembro, novamente no Jamor, frente a Hong Kong China, naquele que será o segundo teste desta janela internacional. A equipa terá de melhorar significativamente a sua organização e condução do jogo se quiser somar pontos importantes para o ranking mundial e, sobretudo, reforçar a sua posição nos potes do sorteio para o Mundial de 2027.
Portugal play again on November 15, again at Jamor, against Hong Kong China in the second match of the international window. The team will need to significantly improve its organization and game management if it hopes to gather important ranking points and, above all, strengthen its position in the seeding pots for the 2027 World Cup draw.
