Portugal perde contra a Roménia e fica em quarto lugar no REC.

The best part: Nothing to highlight.

O menos bom: bastantes aspetos do jogo de Portugal mas vamos escolher a indisciplina. Portugal cometeu – em especial na primeira parte – penalidade atrás de penalidade, erro atrás de erro, que tornaram este jogo impossível de ganhar.

The not-so-good part: Many aspects of Portugal’s game, but indiscipline stands out. Especially in the first half, Portugal committed penalty after penalty, error after error, making this game impossible to win.

Melhor em Campo: Joris Moura entrou bem na partida e conseguiu dar alguma forma ao ataque lusitano mas o prémio de melhor em campo vai de novo para Nicolàs Martins. Não sabe jogar mal e, num dia em que nada saiu bem, o asa português continuou muito bem a placar, tendo conseguido ainda dois turnovers importantes.

Player of the match: Joris Moura came into the game well and managed to bring some structure to Portugal’s attack, but the best player on the field was once again Nicolás Martins. He simply does not play badly, and on a day when nothing went right, the Portuguese flanker continued to tackle effectively and secured two important turnovers.

Pensava o autor desta crónica que o nível exibicional não podia piorar relativamente ao jogo contra a Espanha mas, infelizmente, estava enganado. Portugal foi batido em casa pela Roménia num jogo em que nunca esteve no controlo das operações nem perto de conseguir dar a volta ao marcador.

Portugal tinha batido a seleção dos Cárpatos durante a fase de grupos, naquela que foi a melhor exibição da era Mannix. Para este jogo, havia a expetativa que Portugal conseguisse repetir a proeza e assegurar o terceiro lugar no REC2025. No entanto, não foi nada disso que aconteceu.

I must confess: I thought that Portugal’s performance could not get worse than it did against Spain, but unfortunately, I was wrong. Portugal was beaten at home by Romania in a game where they were never in control nor anywhere near turning the score around.

Portugal had defeated the Carpathian team during the group stage in what was the best performance of the Mannix era. For this game, there was hope that Portugal could repeat the feat and secure third place in the REC 2025. However, that was far from the case.

O jogo começou quase com um ensaio romeno: dog leg gigante na linha portuguesa e a equipa visitante a ficar a escassos centímetros de marcar. Valeu uma placagem providencial em cima da linha ensaio a evitar males maiores. Os primeiros oito minutos de jogo foram bastante incaracteristicos,  com erros de handling de ambas as partes e rugby ofensivo sem fio condutor. No entanto, a Roménia tinha mais posse e era mais consistente. Aos 10 minutos de jogo, essa consistência foi premiada: penalidade ganha ja dentro dos 22 lusitanos e 0-3 no marcador.

The match nearly started with a Romanian try: a huge dog-leg in the Portuguese defensive line allowed the visiting team to come within inches of scoring. Only a crucial last-ditch tackle on the try line prevented the worst. The first eight minutes of the match were rather messy, with handling errors from both sides and disorganized attacking play. However, Romania had more possession and was more consistent. At the 10-minute mark, that consistency paid off: a penalty won inside Portugal’s 22, and the scoreboard read 0-3.

Portugal tentou responder de imediato por intermédio de Diogo Rodrigues mas Roménia a defendia muito bem (uma constante durante toda a partida) e conseguiu ganhar uma penalidade. Aos 17mins, Portugal recuperou a oval no ruck já dentro dos seus 22 e, quando se pensava que o perigo tinha passado, uma falha de comunicação entre Raffaele Storti e Simão Bento, voltou a entregar a posse à equipa visitante que não perdoou e marcou o primeiro ensaio da partida (0-10).

Portugal tried to respond immediately through Diogo Rodrigues, but Romania defended extremely well (a theme throughout the match) and won a penalty.

At 17 minutes, Portugal recovered the ball at the ruck inside their own 22, and just when it seemed the danger had passed, a communication breakdown between Raffaele Storti and Simão Bento gifted possession back to the visitors, who didn’t waste the opportunity and scored the first try of the match (0-10).

Desta feita, não houve reação por parte dos Lobos. Se a defender, continuava a sucessão de penalidades portuguesas em várias partes do campo, a atacar o cenário não era muito melhor. Falta de fio condutor, rugby jogado aos repelões e pouca solidariedade na equipa.  Portugal não conseguia entrar no meio campo adversário e continuava a defender mal. Depois de duas penalidades falhadas a Roménia conseguiu finalmente marcar, colocando o marcador em 0-13.

This time, there was no reaction from the Lobos. While on defense, Portugal continued to concede penalties all over the field, and in attack, the situation wasn’t much better. There was no cohesion, the play was disjointed, and the team lacked collective effort. Portugal struggled to cross into the opposition’s half and continued to defend poorly. After missing two penalty kicks, Romania finally converted one, making it 0-13.

Foi preciso esperar até aos 31 mins para que Portugal conseguisse entrar pela segunda (!) vez nos 22 romenos. Penalidade ganha que Vareiro tentou converter mas sem sucesso. Ainda antes do intervalo, tempo para mais um ensaio da Roménia. Boa jogada do ataque dos Oaks, com uma sequência de três offloads que rasgaram por completo a defensiva nacional e ensaio na ponta direita do ataque. Ao intervalo, o marcador assinalava 0-18, uma vantagem romena inteiramente merecida.

It took until the 31st minute for Portugal to enter Romania’s 22 for only the second (!) time in the match. They won a penalty, which Vareiro attempted to convert but missed. Just before halftime, Romania struck again. A well-executed attacking play with a sequence of three offloads completely dismantled Portugal’s defense, resulting in a try on the right wing. At halftime, the scoreboard showed 0-18—an entirely deserved lead for Romania.

A segunda parte começou com Joris Moura a entrar para o lugar de Manuel Vareiro (mas uma exibição muitíssimo apagada do jovem internacional lusitano) e a esperança que as coisas pudessem melhor. No entanto, rapidamente se percebeu que não iria ser assim. Portugal cometeu mais duas penalidades em três minutos e continuava sem conseguir ligar o ataque.

The second half started with Joris Moura replacing Manuel Vareiro (another very underwhelming performance from the young Portuguese international), bringing hope that things might improve. However, it quickly became evident that this would not be the case. Portugal conceded two more penalties within three minutes and continued to struggle to link their attacking play.

Aos 48mins, aquela que tinha sido até ao momento, a melhor hipótese para o ataque luso:  alinhamento a 8m da linha de ensaio romena, três pick and go do pack português mas oval teimosamente a ficar a centímetros da linha de ensaio.

Ao contrário da primeira parte, Portugal jogava na metade romena mas, infelizmente, continuava a cometer bastantes erros e a conceder penalidades. No entanto, aos 58 minutos, Joris Moura, com um grande chip and chase, arrancou um amarelo ao ponta romeno e a correspondente penalidade. Na sequência, boa maul de Portugal com Nuno Mascarenhas a marcar o primeiro ensaio dos Lobos na partida.

48 minutes in, came Portugal’s best attacking opportunity thus far: a lineout eight meters from Romania’s try line, followed by three pick-and-go attempts from the Portuguese forwards, but the ball stubbornly remained just inches short of the line.

Unlike the first half, Portugal was playing in Romania’s half, but unfortunately, the team continued to make numerous errors and concede penalties. However, at 58 minutes, Joris Moura produced a brilliant chip-and-chase, drawing a yellow card for the Romanian winger and winning a penalty. From the resulting play, a strong maul by Portugal allowed Nuno Mascarenhas to score the Lobos’ first try of the match.

No reatamento, mais uma penalidade de Portugal, Roménia aos postes e 7-21, resultado com que se chegou ao final da partida.

Portugal terminou o REC 2025 na quarta posição e, apesar de ter garantido a presença no próximo campeonato do mundo, estas duas últimas exibições deixam-nos algo preocupados. Tirando a partida na Roménia, Portugal foi bastante inconsistente e não mostra que está a evoluir de jogo para jogo. Simon Mannix disse-o contra a Espanha e repetiu a ideia esta tarde: fomos maus. Temos dois anos para nos prepararmos para a Austrália e temos que trabalhar mais e melhor para não destruirmos todo o crédito ganho num já muito longinquo, ano de 2023.

Right after the restart, Portugal conceded yet another penalty, Romania opted for the posts, and the score moved to 7-21, which remained unchanged until the final whistle.

Portugal finished the REC 2025 in fourth place and, despite securing qualification for the next World Cup, these last two performances raise some concerns. Apart from the game in Romania, Portugal was highly inconsistent and has not shown signs of steady improvement from match to match. Simon Mannix said it after the Spain game and repeated it this afternoon: we were bad.

We have two years to prepare for Australia, and we must work harder and better to ensure we don’t waste all the progress made since that now-distant year of 2023.
