Portugal vence as Ilhas Fiji por 24-23 no jogo de despedida do Campeonato do Mundo 2023!
O melhor: a primeira vitória de Portugal no Campeonato do Mundo!! Tirando isso, foi A PRIMEIRA VITÓRIA DE PORTUGAL NO CAMPEONATO DO MUNDO!!!! Os jogadores foram incríveis, a equipa técnica foi sensacional, o staff foi excelente, os adeptos foram incansáveis. Foi um dos maiores feitos da história do desporto Português e um privilégio presenciar ao vivo tamanho momento.
The best part: Portugal’s first victory in the World Cup!! Apart from that, it was PORTUGAL’S FIRST VICTORY IN THE WORLD CUP!!!! The players were incredible, the coaching staff was sensational, the support staff was excellent, and the fans were tireless. It was one of the greatest achievements in Portuguese sports history, and a privilege to witness such a moment live.
O menos bom: : se o resultado tivesse sido outro, tinha uma coisa ou outra para escrever mas, neste caso, isso agora não interessa para nada.
The not-so-good part: If the result had been different, there might have been a thing or two to write about, but in this case, it doesn’t matter at all.
Melhor em Campo: durante o jogo, como sempre fazemos fomos debatendo quem poderia ser o vencedor deste prémio mas haviam tantos jogadores a fazer uma exibição excecional que nos foi impossível escolher apenas um. Por isso escolhemos todos. Todos os jogadores, quer tenham feito todos os jogos ou nenhum. Todos os membros da equipa técnica e staff. Toda a gente que fez parte deste grupo e tornou possível a participação dos Lobos neste Campeonato do Mundo. Simplesmente espetacular.
Player of the match: During the game, as we always do, we debated who could be the winner of this award. However, there were so many players delivering exceptional performances that it was impossible for us to choose just one. So, we chose them all. Every player, whether they played every game or none. Every member of the coaching staff and support staff. Everyone who was part of this group and made Portugal’s participation in this World Cup possible. Simply spectacular.

O jogo contra as Ilhas Fiji marcou o final da participação da seleção Portuguesa no Campeonato do Mundo mas, espera este que vos escreve, marcou o início de uma nova era no rugby nacional. Portugal brilhou num Mundial para o qual nem se tinha originalmente qualificado, mas só surpreendeu aqueles que não acompanhavam regularmente os Lobos.
The match against Fiji marked the end of the Portuguese national team’s participation in the World Cup, but, in the opinion of the one writing to you, it marked the beginning of a new era in Portuguese rugby. Portugal shone in a World Cup for which they hadn’t originally qualified, but only surprised those who didn’t regularly follow os Lobos.
O balanço oficial mostra uma vitória, um empate, e duas derrotas mas o que ninguém conseque quantificar é o número de adeptos de rugby que ficaram maravilhados com as exibições deixadas em campo, quantas pessoas que nunca tinham visto a oval ser passada ficaram agarradas à TV com a emoção de ver os Lobos ganhar metro atrás de metro, ou a saltar no sofá com cada um dos oito ensaios marcados na prova. E quantos pequenos e pequenas viram aqueles gigantes em campo disseram aos pais e às mães “eu também quero jogar rugby” e lá irão, nesta semana ou na próxima, entrar em campo pela primeira vez e “fazer como eles fizeram”, num qualquer clube por este país fora.
The official tally shows one win, one draw, and two losses, but what no one can quantify is the number of rugby fans who were amazed by the performances on the field, how many people who had never seen the oval ball passed were glued to their TVs, and how many young boys and girls saw those giants on the pitch and said to their parents, “I want to play rugby too.” And they will, this week or the next, walk on the pitch for the first time and “do as they did” at clubs all over the country.
Fora do campo, foram milhares os adeptos que viajaram para Nice, Toulouse, ou Saint-Étienne, cantaram até ficar sem voz e pintaram com as cores nacionais um país que tem sido casa para muitos Portugueses durante várias décadas. O brilho nos olhos daqueles que já só conhecem Portugal nas férias, a chamar pelos ídolos que, apesar de exaustos, tinham sempre mais tempo para uma fotografia mostra bem o amor daqueles que seguiram esta seleção de perto. Um abraço especial aos Heróis, do Mar ou do Bar, que fizeram de qualquer canto um salão de festas onde todos eram bem-vindos.
Off the field, thousands of fans traveled to Nice, Toulouse, or Saint-Étienne, sang until they lost their voices, and painted a country that has been home to many Portuguese for several decades with national colors. The sparkle in the eyes of those who now only know Portugal during vacations, calling for their idols who, despite being exhausted, always had time for a photograph, shows the love of those who closely followed this team. A special shout-out to the Heroes, from the Sea or from the Bar, who turned any corner into a party hall where everyone was welcome.
O apito final na partida contra as Ilhas Fiji marcou o adeus de vários Lobos à seleção nacional. Confirmados, para já, apenas Mike Tadjer e Patrice Lagisquet mas certamente que outros seguirão o mesmo caminho. O primeiro vai pendurar as botas, disfrutar de um descanso em família e do sol de Perpignan. O segundo, que pegou numa equipa em 27° no ranking mundial e a deixa, quatro anos depois, no 13° lugar e que, no entretanto, mudou a opinião de meio Mundo sobre o valor dos Lobos, volta para o seu trabalho “habitual” e para a família. Podem sair com a certeza que já ninguém pensa que Portugal só estava no Mundial “para fazer número” ou que se devia reduzir o número de equipas para 16 ou que ninguém quer saber de nós. Mostrámos quem somos e que estamos aqui para ficar.
The final whistle in the game against Fiji marked the farewell of several Wolves from the national team. Confirmed, for now, only Mike Tadjer and Patrice Lagisquet, but surely others will follow the same path. The first will hang up his boots, enjoy some family time and the sun in Perpignan. Quando começámos a antevisão deste Campeoanto do Mundo, fomos entrevistando jogadores e um dos sentimentos transversais a todos era que queriam deixar os adeptos orgulhosos daquilo que iriam ver em campo. Missão (mais que) cumprida. As memórias que proporcionaram a todos os que acompanharam esta equipa durante este mês nunca vão desaparecer.

When we started the preview of this World Cup, we interviewed players, and one common sentiment was that they wanted to make the fans proud of what they would see on the field. Mission (more than) accomplished. The memories they provided to everyone who followed this team during this month will never fade away.
