Portugal vence a Alemanha e qualifica-se para o Campeonato do Mundo

O melhor: Vamos ao Campeonato do Mundo em 2027! Vitória robusta que qualificou os Lobos para o terceiro mundial da sua história (segundo consecutivo). Parabéns aos intervenientes pela alegria que deram a todos os adeptos da seleção.

The best part: We’re going to the World Cup in 2027! A strong win that qualified the Lobos for the third World Cup in their history (second in a row). Congratulations to the players for the joy they brought to all the team’s fans.

O menos bom: A experiência antes do jogo foi aberracional. As portas só abriram 1h antes do início do encontro e para uma fila de quase 8mil pessoas, haviam 2 membros de staff a verificar bilhetes. Muita gente só conseguiu entrar já tinham sido jogados 25mins de jogo. Uma experiência que irá certamente afastar pessoas do rugby e que claramente manchou um dia de festa.

Se se sabia de antemão o número de bilhetes vendidos e se no último fim-de-semana as coisas já tinham corrido mal, é inconcebível que o problema não só nao tenha sido resolvido como piorou!

The not-so-good part: The pre-match experience was abhorrent. The doors only opened 1 hour before the start of the match and for a queue of almost 8,000 people, there were 2 members of staff checking tickets. Many people only managed to get in 25 minutes into the game. An experience that will certainly put people off rugby and which clearly tainted a day of celebration.

If the number of tickets sold was known beforehand, and if things had already gone wrong last weekend, it’s inconceivable that the problem has not only not been solved, but has even gotten worse!

Melhor em Campo: Vincent Pinto e Simão Bento fizeram uma excelente partida, bastante acertados a defender e a emprestar magia ao ataque dos Lobos. No entanto, o prémio de melhor em campo vai para Nicolàs Martins. Partida soberba do 7 português! Dois ensaios marcados, placagem atrás de placagem e entrega total do primeiro ao último minuto no jogo. No fim, a felicidade pura no rosto de quem tinha acabado de marcar passagem para a Austrália.

Player of the match: Vincent Pinto and Simão Bento played an excellent match, very good defensively and providing magic for the Lobos’ attack. However, the award for best on the pitch goes to Nicolàs Martins. Superb performance from the Portuguese 7! Two tries scored, tackle after tackle and total commitment from the first minute of the game to the last. At the end, there was pure happiness on the face of someone who had just booked his ticket to Australia.

Portugal sabia que uma vitória bastava para assegurar um lugar no próximo Campeonato do Mundo e os Lobos não desiludiram. Comparativamente ao encontro contra a Bélgica, Simon Mannix fez poucas alterações: Anthony Alves começou a 3 por troca com Diogo Hasse Ferreira e Diego Pinheiro entrava para 6, empurrando João Granate para 8. Nos 3/4s, a única alteração foi a entrada de Hugo Camacho para 9, por troca com Samuel Marques.

Portugal knew that a win was enough to secure a place in the next World Cup and the Wolves didn’t disappoint. Compared to the match against Belgium, Simon Mannix made few changes: Anthony Alves started at 3 in exchange for Diogo Hasse Ferreira and Diego Pinheiro came in at 6, pushing João Granate to 8. In the “backs”, the only change was Hugo Camacho coming in at 9, swapping with Samuel Marques.

Portugal começou o jogo instalado na metade alemã mas foram precisos esperar 9 minutos para o primeiro ensaio da partida: jogada bem ensaiada por parte do ataque lusitano e foi Hugo Camacho a cruzar a linha de ensaio. Conversão de Joris Moura (muito acertado a partir do tee) e 7-0 no marcador.
O ensaio não mudou o sentido do jogo, com Portugal sempre a atacar e a Alemanha a defender como podia. 10 minutos depois, de novo por Hugo Camacho, Portugal voltou a marcar (14-0) e, a partir daí, ficou a certeza que Portugal ja tinha um pé e meio na Austrália.
Os Lobos jogavam bem, com um rugby rápido e a oval a circular entre vários jogadores. Nota-se o dedo do novo treinador, com um rugby ofensivo muito atractivo, pecando às vezes pela aparente ânsia de querer fazer tudo demasiado rápido.
Até ao fim da primeira parte, tempo para mais três ensaios (dois de Nicolàs Martins e um de Diego Pinheiro), que levaram as equipas para o balneário com o marcador a assinalar 35-0.

Portugal started the game settled in the German half but it took nine minutes for the first try of the match: a well-rehearsed move by the Portuguese attack and Hugo Camacho crossing the try line. Joris Moura converted (very well from the tee) and the score was 7-0.
The try didn’t change the direction of the game, with Portugal always attacking and Germany defending as best they could. 10 minutes later, again through Hugo Camacho, Portugal scored again (14-0) and, from then on, it was certain that Portugal already had a foot and a half in Australia.
The Wolves played well, with fast rugby and the oval circulating between several players. You could see the new coach’s influence, with some very attractive attacking style of rugby, but at times with a seeming eagerness to do everything too quickly.
By the end of the first half, there was time for three more tries (two from Nicolàs Martins and one from Diego Pinheiro), which took the teams into the locker room with the scoreboard reading 35-0.

Portugal tinha o resultado na mão mas entrou na 2a parte com mais um ensaio. Desta feita, foi Simão Bento – em excelente plano nos dois primeiros jogos – a marcar pelos Lobos.
A partir daí, Portugal baixou o ritmo da partida e limitou-se a gerir a vantagem que tinha. A Alemanha marcou os seus primeiros pontos à passagem do minuto 60 (42-14) ao que Portugal respondeu com mais dois ensaios (bis de Simão Bento e ensaio do veterano Francisco Pinto Magalhães). Neste último, destaque para José Lima que, num grande gesto, ofereceu a oval para o médio de formação marcar.

Portugal had the result in hand but entered the second half with another goal. This time it was Simão Bento – in excellent form in the first two games – who scored for the Wolves.
From then on, Portugal slowed down the pace of the match and just managed to hold on to their lead. Germany scored their first points in the 60th minute (42-14), to which Portugal responded with two more tries (an encore from Simão Bento and a try from veteran Francisco Pinto Magalhães). In this last one, José Lima stood out with a great gesture, offered the ball for the midfielder to score.

Até ao fim, houve tempo ainda para a Alemanha marcar o segundo ensaio, após um erro no passe de Portugal.

Os Lobos vão discutir o importante primeiro lugar no grupo já no próximo fim-de-semana, numa longa deslocação até à Roménia. Recorde-se que os dois primeiros classificados do REC serão colocados no pote 3 do sorteio, aumentando a probabilidade de passagem aos 16avos de final.

In the end, there was still time for Germany to score their second try, after a mistake in Portugal’s passing.

The Wolves will be fighting it out for first place in the group next weekend, with a long trip to Romania. The top two teams in the REC will be placed in pot 3 of the draw, increasing their chances of reaching the last 16.

Será um teste bem mais exigente para a equipa nacional, que se espera continue a evoluir e a corrigir alguns do erros que tem cometido.

It will be a much more demanding test for the national team, which will hopefully continue to evolve and correct some of the mistakes it has made.
