Lusitanos estreiam-se com vitória e ponto de bónus na Rugby Europe Supercup 25/26

O melhor: A equipa portuguesa entrou com o pé direito na edição 25/26 da Rugby Europe Supercup, vencendo os Bohemia Rugby Warriors por margem confortável e garantindo o ponto de bónus ofensivo. Apesar de uma primeira metade algo equilibrada, os Lusitanos aceleraram o ritmo após o intervalo, somando seis ensaios e mostrando a qualidade do seu plantel.

The best part: The Portuguese team started off on the right foot in the 25/26 edition of the Rugby Europe Supercup, defeating the Bohemia Rugby Warriors by a comfortable margin and securing the offensive bonus point. Despite a somewhat balanced first half, the Lusitanos picked up the pace after the break, scoring six tries and showcasing the quality of their squad.

O menos bom: O jogo foi disputado à mesma hora de três encontros da Taça de Portugal, o que não ajuda à promoção da Supercup junto do público português. Numa altura em que se fala constantemente em promover o rugby nacional e em aumentar a sua visibilidade, é difícil compreender decisões que acabam por dispersar atenções e limitar o impacto de competições internacionais como esta.

The Not So Good part: The match was scheduled at the same time as three Portuguese Cup games, which does little to help promote the Supercup among the Portuguese public. At a time when there is constant talk about promoting national rugby and increasing its visibility, it’s hard to understand decisions that end up splitting attention and limiting the impact of international competitions like this.

Melhor em campo: Nuno Sousa Guedes. O defesa do CDUP regressou à competição após uma longa paragem por lesão e foi decisivo na conquista da vitória, mas sobretudo do ponto de bónus. Embora menos interventivo do que é habitual, mostrou eficácia total nas conversões dos ensaios lusos e foi peça-chave na reta final do encontro, culminando com a assistência para o sexto ensaio da equipa.

Player of the Match: Nuno Sousa Guedes. The CDUP fullback returned to action after a long injury layoff and was crucial not only in securing the win but especially in earning the bonus point. Although less active than usual, he was flawless in converting the Lusitanos’ tries and played a key role in the final stretch, finishing with the assist for the team’s sixth try.

A nova temporada da Rugby Europe Supercup arrancou com mudanças significativas no modelo competitivo e com os Lusitanos a entrarem em campo determinados a deixar marca. A equipa portuguesa, composta por muitos jogadores internacionais, mas com ainda poucas internacionalizações – apenas David Wallis e o regressado Nuno Sousa Guedes estiveram presentes no Mundial de 2023 – estreou-se com uma vitória convincente frente aos Bohemia Rugby Warriors, garantindo o ponto de bónus ofensivo já na segunda parte.

The new season of the Rugby Europe Supercup kicked off with significant changes to the competition format and with the Lusitanos taking the field determined to make their mark. The Portuguese team, featuring many international players but still with relatively few caps — only David Wallis and the returning Nuno Sousa Guedes were part of the 2023 World Cup squad — started with a convincing win over the Bohemia Rugby Warriors, securing the offensive bonus point in the second half.

Este ano, a competição apresenta um formato renovado: seis franquias disputam uma fase de grupos em sistema de round robin entre Outubro e Dezembro, com os quatro melhores a seguirem para as meias-finais. Destaca-se também a ausência da franquia georgiana Black Lion, vencedora de todas as edições anteriores, cuja federação decidiu focar-se exclusivamente na EPCR Challenge Cup, deixando a Supercup sem o seu campeão habitual.

This year, the competition features a revamped format: six franchises compete in a round-robin group stage between October and December, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals. Notably absent this year are the Georgian franchise Black Lion, winners of all previous editions, whose federation chose to focus solely on the EPCR Challenge Cup, leaving the Supercup without its reigning champions.

O jogo disputado em Lisboa começou equilibrado, com ambas as equipas a medir forças nos primeiros minutos. A primeira alteração no marcador surgiu aos 16 minutos, quando uma placagem agressiva sobre Tomás Batista resultou na perda de bola, prontamente aproveitada por Adam Koblic para um ensaio fácil que colocou os Warriors na frente.

The match, held in Lisbon, began evenly, with both teams testing each other in the early minutes. The first score came at the 16-minute mark, when an aggressive tackle on Tomás Batista led to a turnover, quickly capitalized on by Adam Koblic for an easy try, putting the Warriors ahead.

A resposta dos Lusitanos chegou aos 21 minutos, um maul dinâmico bem trabalhado permitiu a Santiago Lopes chegar ao ensaio e empatar o encontro. O ritmo manteve-se intenso mas com períodos de alguma descoordenação de parte a parte e, pouco depois, os Warriors voltaram a adiantar-se no marcador. Um pontapé longo do médio de abertura Matej Sehnal ganhou muitos metros, com a bola a ser captada novamente por Koblic. Após vários pontos de fixação, a bola circulou até à direita do ataque, onde o centro Jindrich Kulhavy finalizou um novo ensaio.

The Lusitanos responded at 21 minutes, with a well-executed driving maul that allowed Santiago Lopes to score and level the game. The pace remained high but somewhat disorganized on both sides, and shortly after, the Warriors took the lead again. A long kick from fly-half Matej Sehnal gained significant ground, with the ball recovered once more by Koblic. After a series of breakdowns, the ball was moved wide to the right, where center Jindrich Kulhavy finished off another try.

Os Lusitanos não estavam a conseguir ser rápidos na circulação de bola nem a lançar os “três de trás”, e apesar de passarem largos minutos instalados na área de 22 metros adversária, só voltaram a marcar aos 36 minutos. A jogada começou com uma arrancada impressionante de Maximillien Coutts, que ultrapassou quatro adversários checos. Na sequência, Alfredo Almeida aproveitou o desequilíbrio defensivo para concretizar o segundo ensaio luso. Nuno Sousa Guedes, com uma tarde de grande acerto, converteu o segundo pontapé da tarde e levou o jogo para o intervalo empatado a 14-14.

The Lusitanos were struggling to move the ball quickly and involve their back three, and although they spent several minutes in the opposition 22, they only managed to score again in the 36th minute. The play began with a brilliant run from Maximillien Coutts, who beat four Czech defenders. Capitalizing on the broken defense, Alfredo Almeida finished off the move with the second Portuguese try. Nuno Sousa Guedes, having a strong day with the boot, converted his second kick of the afternoon to send the match into halftime tied at 14-14.

A segunda parte trouxe maior domínio da equipa portuguesa, que acelerou o ritmo, foi crescendo no jogo e somou vários ensaios. Aos 45 minutos, o centro Guilherme Vasconcelos quebrou a linha defensiva checa, evitou duas placagens e conseguiu marcar. Sete minutos depois, aos 52, foi a vez de Francisco Almeida finalizar uma nova jogada bem construída a partir de um maul, consolidando a vantagem dos Lusitanos.

The second half saw increased dominance from the Portuguese team, who upped the tempo, grew into the match, and racked up several tries. At 45 minutes, center Guilherme Vasconcelos broke through the Czech defense, evaded two tackles, and scored. Seven minutes later, at 52 minutes, Francisco Almeida finished off another well-constructed play from a maul, extending the Lusitanos’ lead.

Aos 58 minutos, chegou o quinto ensaio para os portugueses, marcado por Tomás Amado após uma excelente assistência de Vasco Leite  grande entrada em jogo do jovem jogador luso — que, com uma corrida poderosa, deixou vários adversários checos para trás. Os Bohemia Warriors ainda conseguiram reduzir a diferença com o segundo ensaio da tarde de Adam Koblic, muito consentido pela defesa portuguesa.

At 58 minutes, the Portuguese scored their fifth try, with Tomás Amado touching down after an excellent assist from Vasco Leite — a strong debut performance from the young Portuguese player, who made a powerful run past several Czech defenders. The Bohemia Warriors managed to narrow the gap with a second try from Adam Koblic, conceded far too easily by the Portuguese defense.

Até ao final, os Lusitanos mantiveram o controlo do jogo e, já para lá dos 80 minutos regulamentares, chegaram ao sexto ensaio e ao ponto de bónus ofensivo. Nuno Sousa Guedes voltou a ser decisivo, quebrando a linha defensiva, aguentando a placagem e, em off-load, assistindo Vasco Leite para o ensaio final.

O próximo jogo dos Lusitanos na competição será frente aos Brussels Devils, no dia 18 de Outubro, na Bélgica.

Until the end, the Lusitanos maintained control of the game, and well past the 80th minute, they scored their sixth try and secured the offensive bonus point. Once again, Nuno Sousa Guedes was instrumental, breaking the defensive line, holding through a tackle, and offloading to assist Vasco Leite for the final try.

The Lusitanos’ next game in the competition will be against the Brussels Devils on October 18, in Belgium.
