O pior: A dificuldade em travar o jogo georgiano nas fases estáticas, levando Portugal a cometer várias faltas perto da área de ensaio – infrações que resultaram em dois cartões amarelos.

The not-so-good part: The difficulty in stopping the Georgian game in the set pieces, which led Portugal to commit several penalties close to the try area – infractions that resulted in two yellow cards.

Melhor em Campo: Manuel Vareiro. O médio de abertura do Provence Rugby (ProD2) voltou a brilhar, tal como na meia‑final, assumindo os pontapés aos postes após duas falhas iniciais de Domingos Cabral. Converteu quatro em cinco penalidades, acrescentou uma conversão de ensaio decisiva, foi muito dinâmico no jogo ao pé a organizar o ataque e ainda executou uma placagem determinante que evitou um ensaio certo da Geórgia.

Player of the match: Manuel Vareiro. The fly-half for Provence Rugby (ProD2) shone once again, just as he did in the semi-final, taking over the kicking duties after two early misses from Domingos Cabral. He converted four out of five penalties, added a decisive try conversion, was very dynamic with his tactical kicking while organizing the attack, and also produced a crucial tackle that prevented what looked like a certain Georgian try.

No Estádio Municipal de Butarque, em Leganés nos arredores de Madrid, Portugal entrou em campo com a ambição clara de recuperar um título que não conquistava desde 2004. Do outro lado surgia uma Geórgia habituada a dominar a competição – vencedora de 14 das últimas 15 edições – e que apresentava jogadores de elevada experiência internacional, incluindo vários atletas que competem no Top 14 francês.A seleção portuguesa apresentou apenas uma alteração no XV inicial face à meia‑final: Manuel Cardoso Pinto regressou à ponta, substituindo Simão Bento.

At the Estádio Municipal de Butarque in Leganés, on the outskirts of Madrid, Portugal took the field with the clear ambition of reclaiming a title they had not won since 2004. On the other side stood a Georgia side accustomed to dominating the competition—winners of 14 of the last 15 editions—and featuring players with significant international experience, including several athletes who compete in France’s Top 14. The Portuguese team made just one change to the starting XV compared to the semi-final: Manuel Cardoso Pinto returned on the wing, replacing Simão Bento.

Desde o início, Portugal mostrou personalidade, tentando contrariar a habitual superioridade georgiana nas fases estáticas com uma defesa compacta e um jogo à mão criterioso. Ainda assim, a pressão dos mauls e formações ordenadas dos georgianos empurrou os Lobos para várias faltas. Foi num desses momentos, aos 25 minutos, que David Wallis viu cartão amarelo e, na sequência direta, a Geórgia abriu o marcador por Ilia Spanderashvili. Na resposta, Manuel Vareiro assumiu o papel de chutador e, aos 35 minutos, colocou finalmente Portugal no marcador.

From the start, Portugal showed character, attempting to counter Georgia’s usual dominance in the set pieces with a compact defense and careful ball-in-hand play. Still, the pressure from Georgian mauls and scrums forced the Lobos into several penalties. It was in one of those moments, in the 25th minute, that David Wallis received a yellow card and, in the immediate aftermath, Georgia opened the scoring through Ilia Spanderashvili. In response, Manuel Vareiro stepped up as the kicker and, in the 35th minute, finally put Portugal on the scoreboard.

A reta final da primeira parte voltou a ser dominada pela insistência georgiana nas fases estáticas. As infrações portuguesas sucederam‑se e, já com Luís Lopes a cumprir castigo após novo cartão amarelo, Jalagonia marcou o segundo ensaio georgiano, convertido por Abzhandadze, levando o jogo para o intervalo em 12-3. Ainda assim, Portugal mantinha-se dentro do resultado, o que permitiria acreditar numa segunda parte de sucesso.

The closing stages of the first half were once again dominated by Georgian insistence in the set pieces. Portuguese infractions followed one another and, with Luís Lopes serving a new yellow card suspension, Jalagonia scored Georgia’s second try, converted by Abzhandadze, sending the match into halftime at 12–3. Even so, Portugal remained within reach, allowing them to believe in a successful second half.

E foi precisamente isso que aconteceu. Mesmo a começar com 14 jogadores, a seleção portuguesa entrou mais atrevida após o descanso. Vareiro, numa exibição de enorme maturidade, voltou a reduzir distâncias aos 49 minutos, alimentando a crença dos muitos adeptos portugueses em Leganés. Dez minutos depois, rubricou um gesto técnico decisivo: um 50/22 perfeito que lançou Portugal para uma plataforma ofensiva perigosa. Daí resultou nova penalidade convertida, e o marcador chegou aos 12–9, abrindo definitivamente o caminho para a remontada.

And that is precisely what happened. Even starting the half with 14 players, the Portuguese team returned from the break more daring. Vareiro, delivering a performance of great maturity, reduced the deficit again in the 49th minute, fueling the belief of the many Portuguese supporters in Leganés. Ten minutes later, he produced a decisive technical moment: a perfect 50/22 kick that gave Portugal a dangerous attacking platform. From there came another converted penalty, bringing the score to 12–9 and opening the door to the comeback.

A Geórgia ainda tentou travar o ímpeto português com um ensaio de Beka Gorgadze aos 66 minutos, elevando o resultado para 17-9. Mas, longe de abalar, Portugal mostrou a melhor versão dos Lobos – resiliente, inteligente e emocionalmente estável. A reviravolta chegou em três minutos que mudaram o jogo completamente: aos 71 minutos, Vareiro somou mais três pontos através de uma penalidade e recolocou Portugal no resultado. Logo de seguida Otar Metreveli carregou o número 15 português no ar viu cartão amarelo, deixando a Geórgia em desvantagem numérica até ao final do encontro.

Com espaço para acelerar, Portugal lançou-se a uma sucessão de fases rápidas. Hugo Camacho percebeu o desequilíbrio defensivo e abriu com precisão para a direita, onde Vincent Pinto recebeu, ganhou o duelo individual e mergulhou para o ensaio que incendiou o estádio. A conversão de Vareiro colocou pela primeira vez Portugal na frente, 19-17, num dos momentos mais intensos da história recente da seleção..

Georgia still tried to halt Portugal’s momentum with a try by Beka Gorgadze in the 66th minute, pushing the score to 17–9. But far from being shaken, Portugal showed the best version of the Lobos—resilient, intelligent, and emotionally composed. The turnaround arrived in three minutes that completely changed the match: in the 71st minute Vareiro added another three points through a penalty, bringing Portugal back into contention. Shortly after, Otar Metreveli tackled the Portuguese number 15 in the air and received a yellow card, leaving Georgia with one player fewer until the end of the match.

With space to accelerate, Portugal launched into a sequence of fast phases. Hugo Camacho recognized the defensive imbalance and accurately opened play to the right, where Vincent Pinto received the ball, won his one-on-one duel, and dived over for the try that set the stadium alight. Vareiro’s conversion put Portugal ahead for the first time, 19–17, in one of the most intense moments in the recent history of the national team.

Nos minutos finais, a Geórgia tentou fazer valer a sua força física e recorreu novamente às fases estáticas, mas o coração português fechou o jogo. O  bloco defensivo os Lobos foi absolutamente intransponível, com cada placagem, cada ruck limpo, cada metro defendido a mostrar a maturidade de uma equipa que sabia exatamente o que estava em jogo.

Com o apito final, Portugal sagrou-se campeão 22 anos depois, sustentado pela capacidade de resistir nos momentos difíceis e pela inteligência tática demonstrada.

In the final minutes, Georgia tried to rely on their physical strength and returned once more to their set pieces, but Portuguese heart closed the match out. The Lobos’ defensive block was absolutely impenetrable, with every tackle, every cleared ruck, and every meter defended showing the maturity of a team that knew exactly what was at stake.

With the final whistle, Portugal were crowned champions 22 years later, supported by their ability to endure difficult moments and the tactical intelligence they displayed.
